Otherwise, you may end up playing a mod and having no idea what that mod actually changes compared to the base game, which could get a bit frustrating. (I suggest starting the Main Questline, as that has a good progression of gameplay stages in it.) Once you've gotten a fair-sized trade/manufacturing empire built up and have a fair number of ships with full equipment loads,weapons, missiles, etc, and have begun protecting your assets with regular patrols/guards and the like, you'll be better able to know the parts of gameplay you'd like to be a little bit different or "modded." Play it so that you at least get exposed to a good portion of the game.
